Mon Repos Park (Leningrad Oblast)

The subproject goal is to perform restoration works with a view to restoring the historical look of the unique Mon Repos Park ensemble and make it more attractive to visitors.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: (The Mon Repos Park is the only rocky landscape park in Russia. It dates back to the Age of Enlightenment and its layout clearly shows the features of late 18th century landscape parks; however, later changes in the park environment make Mon Repos more similar to the parks of the Romantic Period. The use of rock outcrops in the park environment, prevalence of coniferous species in the park and a highly indented coastline typical of the Vyborg Bay rugged shore – all this distinguishes Mon Repos from landscape estate parks of the Leningrad Oblast and European Russia in general. The Mon Repos specific nature peculiarities lie in a large number of the so called ‘curly rocks’, diversity of flora and fauna (48 species of protected plants, including two plant species registered in the Red Book of Russia; 34 bird and mammal species). The waterfowl rookeries are of special conservation significance.

There are two architectural monuments – the Main House and the Library Outbuilding – that are the core elements of the estate. Both buildings are not only important architectural monuments of the Classical Period but also have a high historical and memorial significance at the level of the region, Russia and Finland. The park is designed for long solitary walks along the winding paths while the park pavilions offer remarkable panoramic views. The park that was established over the course of several decades is a harmonious union of garden art and architecture styles and trends of the period from the late 18th to the first half of the 20th centuries.

The subproject includes: restoration of the 18th century wooden manor (the Main House and the Library Outbuilding) and its adaptation for museum/exhibition purposes; restoration and landscaping of the park historic core, including re-creation of land reclamation systems; shoreline strengthening; cleaning of water bodies and bay area; and restoration of park structures (the Gardener’s House and the Conservatory)).

In 2012-2015, the designer (a Joint Venture composed of CJSC Novaya Era and LLC Architecture Bureau Liteinaya Chast-91) developed scientific design documents for the site (zip, 115.6 Mb) .

In 2015, the scientific design documents for the Mon Repos Park received a positive opinion from the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision which conducted the State Environmental Review, and from Glavgosekspertiza which conducted the State Review.

Competitive selection of the general contractor for rehabilitation/restoration works was announced in 2016.

The restoration contract with JSC Vozrozhdeniye was signed in 2017.
